Worst Kept Secret Fest VII preview: Ladyblazer

By Ryan G

Ladyblazer is a band with a bevy of influences. How else does a band get tapped to play both a garage rock rager and a Ja Rule show within 2 weeks of each other? Just in time for Worst Kept Secret Fest, the band has released their debut LP, titled Can’t Complain, on Flowerpot Records.

The band meshes together alternative rock and hip hop, among other things, in their sound. They list their influences as Mos Def, Odd Future, and Modest Mouse. It just doesn’t get much more eclectic than that, folks. Up and coming noisy psychedelic band Hundos recently gave the band high praise, saying that the band has “a gift for crafting powerful songs.”

So there you have it. An alternative hip hop band who’s won over a psychedelic band that definitely isn’t for everyone (though they are very good). Read more about the band, who closes out the fest on Saturday night (or Sunday morning, if you prefer to look at things that way) below:

Q: What is the best beverage to enjoy at one of your shows? Likewise, what usually keeps you going onstage?

A: Terell – For the people watching, anything that will loosen you up. For me? Just water.
Jordan – The cheapest beer they have.
Dylan – I usually drink a beer on stage to give us an edgier look.

You have a task of getting a person to one of your shows, but they will not hear your music before you go onstage. What do you say?

Jordan – It will be fun!

What’s most encouraging about the current state of the music industry?

The ability to do things independently and share it with a huge audience.

Who from Columbus definitely needs to be heard more in the outside of Ohio (other than you, of course!)?

The Worn Flints, Turtle Island, DOMES, All Over The Place, Etc Etc Etc, Urban Tropic, Pza Party, Cat Turtle, Prosper, Corbezello, Cool Dads

Name the best live band you’ve seen: what made it memorable?

Jordan – WAVVES and Fidlar, I threw up during “Max Can’t Surf” it was rad.

Terell – The Worn Flints at Skully’s. I’ve never seen a better performance.

Dylan – I saw Nine Inch Nails in Indiana during a tornado, it was crazy!

What is the most memorable venue you’ve played and why?

We played the Shrunken Head, it was our first show after a long hiatus and the place was packed with a lot of friends back from school, it was the most fun we’ve had playing live.

Who inspires you? Doesn’t have to be a musician.

Our friends! Whoever I’m around inspires us. It’s great to see other people doing what they love, that’s our biggest inspiration.

Since we’ve already discussed your live show, tell us what it is about your upcoming records that you are most excited about.

We just released our first album! It’s a mix of songs we’ve been working on for around 5 years, we’re really excited to share it with everyone. We’re also looking forward to growing as musicians and trying new things with our next album.

What’s your favorite method of discovering new music?

Live shows! The best way to find new music is to check out any of the many awesome local bands!

Star Wars Ep 7 – yay or nay? why?

Dylan – I don’t really care about star wars to be honest, I probably won’t see it.

Terell and Jordan – fuckin fuck yeah that cross lightsaber is the shit!
