Worst Kept Secret Fest VII preview: Betsy Ross

By Ryan G

Betsy Ross is hitting the club circuit hard. They went from a staple at Bossy Grrl’s Pin Up Joint (a now almost iconic band photo from a gig there has become the face of the band on social media) to an in demand act at nearly every venue in the city… and for good reason.

Their shows are high energy and full of raw passion. Charity Crowe is a front woman who wails in a way that is impossible to ignore. She might not be the most talented singer in the traditional. But a mix of emotion, charisma and swagger (if I can apply that term to a woman). I use that term in the sense of bringing a force to the room, not being conceited. Crowe, her brother Sky, and their drummer David definitely have confidence on stage that only serves to further perpetuate the energy. Betsy Ross is first and foremost a live band, and they’ve already been heralded elsewhere as an act not to miss. They answer our Q&A below:

Q: What is the best beverage to enjoy at one of your shows?

A: Whiskey by far…preferably Bourbon.

Likewise, what usually keeps you going onstage?

Whiskey…preferably bourbon. Haha..and seeing people get down to our tunes.

You have a task of getting a person to one of your shows, but they will not hear your music before you go onstage. What do you say?

We say that We are Betsy Ross, Lets be friends. We sell a good time and an experience. We arent pretentious and we dont keep our listeners at arms length.

What’s most encouraging about the current state of the music industry?

here is so much potential , its just a matter of harnessing the talent and bringing the voices together

What’s been some favorite releases of the band so far this year?

The Betsy Ross EP, which can be found on bandcamp under…wearebetsyross.bandcamp.com. It showcases a few of our favorites but even so, is only a fraction of what we feel represents us most as a band. Our live performance is where our strength lays and so, while we are finishing up our full length album at Oranjudio, we really want to push the vibe of our “live performance”

Who from Columbus definitely needs to be heard more in the outside of Ohio (other than you, of course!)?

Definitely Happy Tooth & Dug. We have been friends with these boys for some time and we love the shit out of them. Completely raw and original from the catchy melodic chorus’ to the metaphorical mind fuck in the verses. Love these boys! Also..The Up All Nights, whom John Petric (Legend in his own Mind), calls, the best rock n roll band to come out of Columbus

What is the most memorable venue you’ve played and why?

That’s a tough one. There are Spacebar and Double Happiness.

Who inspires you? Doesn’t have to be a musician.

Women.

What’s your favorite method of discovering new music?

Going out on the town and/or just stumbling upon music randomly.

Star Wars EP 7 – yay or nay? why?

It’s gotta be a “yay,” because Harrison Ford survived a plane crash to be in the movie.
