Worst Kept Secret Fest VII preview: Nerd Table

Nerd Table has always been at the periphery of my local music knowledge…until now. Sometimes persistence pays off! Nerd Table have been playing the local music game for so long they have lost all qualms they had (if they ever had any) about being abrasive. This band has been going at it since ye olde days of 1998. People born that year are driving now!

Sometimes you can tell a band just doesn’t give a you-know-what. And I mean that in the best way here. There are people that will hate this band and they will take it as a compliment. They call themselves punk and grunge. If locals Friendly Faux and Gelatinous Cube had a baby, this band would be the result, which doesn’t make sense since Nerd Table is older than both bands. Oh well, who needs metaphors anyway!

The band kicks off the seventh edition of Worst Kept Secret Fest.

Enjoy Nerd Table’s surprisingly eloquent responses to our Worst Kept Q&A below:

Q: What is the best beverage to enjoy at one of your shows?

A: I usually drink Diet Mountain Dew. I used to get shit faced on cheap beer at every show but I grew up a little bit. I just drink Natty Light at home now.

Likewise, what usually keeps you going onstage?

The goal is to nail our songs. Presenting our unique blend of weird ass subject matter with a raw edge is its own reward.

You have a task of getting a person to one of your shows, but they will not hear your music before you go onstage. What do you say?

If you are ready for some original, dirty, ballsy, intelligent, possibly offensive punk/grunge/rock shit get your ass to a fucking Nerd Table show.

What’s most encouraging about the current state of the music industry?

To be straight up I am barely encouraged by it. Processed, cookie cutter, bland unoriginal music rules the mainstream. It’s harder and harder for the underground to be heard. The internet is great but its easy to get lost in the sea of bands.

What’s been some favorite releases of the band so far this year?

I know it was 2014 but I have to say Friendly Faux – Three Lefts. GREAT EP!! FF was recorded by Andy Sartain. I encourage any bands that want to get an amazing recording to hit him up. Hold It In from the Melvins is so awesome. I have been deprived of new Butthole Surfers music so this album is a great stop gap. Buzz and Dale never disappoint.

Who from Columbus definitely needs to be heard more in the outside of Ohio (other than you, of course!)?

My favorite Columbus bands are Friendly Faux, Pale Grey Lore, Swarm and Robots’ Revenge.

Name the best live band you’ve seen: what made it memorable?

I don’t care if its cheesy but I say Foo Fighters. They have so many good songs and always play a ton of them.

What is the most memorable venue you’ve played and why?

I am going with Little Brothers. I miss that place. There were so many great shows there.

Who inspires you? Doesn’t have to be a musician.

My inspiration is wanting to leave my mark in this fucked up world. My worst fear is being on this planet and leaving no impact.

Since we’ve already discussed your live show, tell us what it is about your upcoming records that you are most excited about.

Nerd Table has quite a resume of special guests on our recordings. We have worked with Ron Jeremy, Chad Channing, Paul Leary, Dale Crover and more. A young Geoff Spall (Friendly Faux) has agreed to do his thing on a Nerd Table track. I am VERY excited about that. I don’t want to jinx anything else by announcing things too early but I got a few more on deck.

What’s your favorite method of discovering new music?

It used to be buying a random cd in hopes you could strike gold.. and if it sucked you were stuck with it or you traded it in. Now it’s a little more hazy..

Star Wars EP 7 – yay or nay? why?

Hell yes. Even if it sucks its very likely to be better than a lot of the other shit that comes out.
