Unless you are familiar with the music scene in Southern Indiana or had the opportunity to catch them on some dates with Khamsin in early 2018 the name Together in Dust has probably never been much of a blip on your radar. However, they should be. The band has been fairly quiet since pre-pandemic and haven’t released any new music since the release of their 2017 EP, Alive in the Valley.
All of that is set to change this week with the release of their latest single, “Fire & Embers” which carries some strong comparisons to the late mewithoutYou (RIP). The comparison is nothing new as the influence is blatantly obvious throughout the course of the band’s tenure. The blend of post-hardcore and oft spoken word like verses create a beautifully crafted soundscape and scratches the itch for those looking for a band to help fill the large void left when mewithoutYou hung it all up in 2022.
“Fire & Embers” opens with with an ethereal backdrop that is quickly joined by a catchy and melodic bass riff all leading up to the inclusion of the drums and guitars before the vocals meld nicely into the atmosphere that has been created. Vocalist Nate Hicks seems to be eerily channeling Aaron Weiss in some capacity as their are uncanny similarities with Hicks’ delivery. Throughout the course of the track’s runtime of almost four minutes it wastes no time filling the space with an earthy and melodic soundscape that tells a compelling tale in just a short amount of time. If this is a glimpse of more to come from Together in Dust then I am eager to hear what else they have been working on the past few years. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long.
“Fire & Embers” drops this Friday (April 28th) and you can pre-save it on Spotify here.
