state champs – self titled lp

State Champs has become pop punk stalwarts already, pushing their music and their artistry to the forefront. Some people write of the genre, assuming it’s hollow, but this act keeps the lights on and the fire burning. Their self-titled record pays homage to the pop punk sound, and the group has worked extensively on their lyrical output, gifting us with enough poetry to spark attention.

The sound is modelled on modern pop punk, and those hooks and grooves are infectious, served up in songs which have substance, a component some band’s lack especially in the pop punk world. The band know they have created a solid foundation too, marking themselves in the book of success.

The Constant opens the record. Such a sturdy sound progress and the band show their pop punk influence hasn’t fizzled out. A girl is the focal point here.

Light Blue starts slowly, and the subtle instrumentals do not clash but increase the intensity. Then, the band rise in the chorus. Yet again, the band describe being love sick.

Sobering is a hate fuelled track, and the chorus bursts in with intention. A girl again is the viewpoint, and the blame becomes contiguous. We hear a different side to the band, as they hurt.

Just A Dream is engulfed in rage. The band is living a hard life. The chorus charges on like electricity.

State Champs offers their heartfelt songs and they dodge clichés.
