Soul Low is a band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They came through town earlier this year and played at Kafe Kerouac. They had a rad set, everyone in attendance kinda was in awe of the level of skill on display. ‘Always Watching’ Out’ is the first song on their Sweet Pea EP. It’s a song that they’ve recently released a video for. Soul Low’s lead singer has a very memorable singing voice. It’s got that surf sound. The parts are all very tight, its garage rock with a hint of The Pixies which I’m fast realizing is a catch-all for the words: good music.
‘OMG STD’ is the second song on the EP. It’s super catchy, and I find it hilarious that its written about, yes, an STD. I feel like like Soul Low is reminiscent of Crazy and the Brains, a band I became aware of through Shibby Pictures, the traveling DIY videographer who does basement showings of his work, shoots little league as a day job, and authors rad punk documentaries. I just got word Soul Low is coming back to town in January, which is super rad. I recommend you guys catch them, they’re a cathartic and fun band, which is a welcome break from the kinds of stuff you hear out there on the regular. This is music by real people, about real things.
‘Green Beams’ is the third song on the ‘Sweet Pea EP’. The vocal harmonies are on point. There’s a twee sound that reminds me of The Unicorns in a cool way. Like, if those guys put away their keyboards and pulled out the guitars. Which they did do on occasion. It’s epic music. The shakey and wavery lead vocals on top of a tight band has a really rad effect on the listener.
The Sweet Pea EP has been out for a good while, it came out this March. The band has been together for awhile which a variety of releases. ‘I can write a poem’ is the fourth song on the EP. It features Lord Fredd33. There is a wretched beauty to this band, that is really hard for you to turn away from. The rest of the EP are demos, and they’re all rad, I recommend you checking it out. Some of these demos are in my mind as good as the ‘official’ versions of these songs. The arrangements are different, and sometimes in the case of ‘STD’ even more raw in a very cool way.
