I sit down with Benjamin Schurr of Br’er, a rad band from DC currently on tour signed to Blight Records (playing Columbus Ohio on Sept 25th at Double Happiness). They’ve played my space before, they’re good people. Read on for the interview.
TUNED UP: For those who havent yet experienced Br’er, how would you describe the experience?
Br’er: We see Br’er as very visceral electronic noise pop. We use a lot of noise and electronics that we manipulate in real time so theres a lot of improvisation in our set as opposed to using backing tracks static sequences. Dance the Shame away!
TUNED UP: Are you guys touring on a new release? What is your latest release, and where can we find it / listen to it / buy it?
Br’er: This tour is a teaser for our next record (which won’t be out til Oct) but if ya sweet talk us we might be able to turn a tease into truth 😉 . It’s being releasing on Vinyl through BLIGHT. Records in a limited run of 100 Screen printed LPS (By our BFFS Sleepy Kitty) and will be on our bandcamp (brerbrerbrer.bandcamp.com), Itunes, Spotify and will be distributed through Dischord Records.
TUNED UP: What kinda vehicle are you traveling in?
Br’er: Dr Vincent Catwater a ford e150 (the chateau edition)
TUNED UP: How have you found Columbus in the past?
Br’er: We’ve played Columbus a bunch over the past 8 years, but I think this time our friend May (who played in Br’er and also is the lead singer of Pree) reached out to Double Happiness and made it happen. I’ve heard great stuff about the space so we’re very excited to play!
TUNED UP: Tell us a bit about the DC scene.
Br’er: The only reason I live in DC is for the music scene. A couple of years ago I was playing in a band called Eskimeaux and we hit a deer on our way to DC and in the week that our car was getting fixed we stayed at this amazing house space called the Paperhaus. Within that week I met so many cool people who convinced me to move to DC and eventually restart Br’er in DC. Also, since DC is such a “organizer/doer” based city, people tend to be really ambitious and get shit done which I really love and find inspiring.
TUNED UP: What’s next for Br’er after tour?
Br’er: We have a new single we just finished up that we’ll hopefully be releasing by the end of the year/early next year. We have a few people doing remixes including Jamie from Xiu Xiu which were really excited about. We’ll also be doing a bunch of weekend tours, working on a new EP and we run our own label BLIGHT. So we’ll be working on releases for all the bands on that as well. BUSY BUSY BEEZ!
