DFA records and I have an interesting relationship. I first became aware of them when I was driving my car on I-675 in 2003, and ‘House of Jealous Lovers’ (The Rapture) came on the radio. It was the now defunct WOXY, an independent radio station that was based out of the Oxford, Ohio area. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was listening to my first DFA band.
I later got into LCD Soundsystem, and after I did a bunch of internet sleuthing, found myself listening to a series of DFA records mix CD’s. These were great compilations of the artists on their labels, but often times on these compilations they would release special DFA remixes.
These remixes are pretty rad. I’ve listened to them countless times. While jogging. While thinking. I lived years of my life to the soundtrack of DFA. (I highly recommend checking out the mini-docu floating around the internet). I once tried to become an employee of DFA Records. Not very hard. *(I think I looked up their employment email and sent them a resume, once, a long time ago. I was very validated. And then I moved on with my life.)
Shocking Pinks is signed to DFA records (Black Dice, Hot Chip, The Juan Maclean, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Shit Robot, Sinkane) they’re also signed to Flying Nun Records (The Verlaines, Pavement) and Stars & Letters Records. They’re from New Zealand. They’re playing our city tomorrow. This is their first ever North American tour I’ve been told.
Shocking Pinks are an interesting band. The more I read about them, the more interesting they get. Nick Harte is a longstanding contributor to the New Zealand music scene. He’s had a string of bands “ranging back 20 years” according to his bio on Flynin Nun records. Live reviews of this tour talk about a band that surprises the viewer, is much different from the recorded sound. They’re much more electronic live. Images of ‘The XX’ are coming to mind.
I’m looking forward to catching our New Zealand friends live in town tomorrow. If your interest is piqued, maybe I’ll see you there too. I’ll be stoked on the fact that I’ll be watching a person whose a person away from both The Rapture and LCD Soundsystem. My early 20s will be invading my late 20s this Friday and I’m stoked.

Shocking Pinks are a band from New Zealand. They’re (alongside Nick Harte’s solo DJ alias Borrowed CS) touring the United States for the first time as a band. They play Columbus Ohio tomorrow at The House with No Name, on a bill with Columbus locals and heavy hitters Damn the Witch Siren, Blacklight Tribe, and TIGR HORS.
