In a world full of metalcore, deathcore, and electronicore, Italy’s Overtures show that heavy metal still exists somewhere. With a new album mastered by Sascha Paeth (Avantasia, Kamelot, Epica), these guys bring something that could save teens everywhere from the dark grasp of breakdowns and Converge clones. It’s nice to know that Europe still seems to understand that metal doesn’t need elements of hardcore.
Like many power metal bands, Overtures display high levels of musicianship on every song. Fans of metal in general will be glad to hear plenty of guitar solos and a vocalist with some serious pipes. Just don’t expect anything too deep lyrically. They don’t quite make it into a Dungeons & Dragons soundtrack, but with lyrics about dreams (“Why do we always have to fade our dreams away/Shouldn’t we keep them all and fight to live them awake”) and astronomical bodies (“We saw the sun, go into the moon/Night after night/we watch the stars crumble to the dawn”) you will be reminded that Entering the Maze is indeed a power metal album. Overall, this is a solid effort. Even if you can’t take the lyrics or vocals, the guitarist and drummer alone are worth a listen. For fans of Kamelot, Dragonforce, and Symphony X.
