Always melancholic, always sincere, always outspoken in a relevant fashion, Overgrow stray back into the light here with their EP This All Will End, and it’s a journey through colliding feelings, broken relationships, and how the world is derailing. The band is supremely talented. There’s no doubting that, and on this 4 song collection, they bite back; they scorn the unintelligent stories for the abstract, and they count every beat of their sore hearts.
The pendulum swings into moments when hope becomes wrapped up in pain, and when the optimism that once was a shelter crumbles into small intricate pieces that are sharp enough to cut through the sinew of expectation. The band is also strained and stretched here with their mental health debilitating and hopeless, and when the mind collapses, the world becomes a frightening place.
Musically, Overgrow knows how to write the right chords, and they know how to structure their songs with heaps of emotion. Guitars steadily come in and conquer like kings, and the slow build ups are incredible. Sullen vocals emerge and the sounds aren’t glamorous in any way, but are significant.
I’ll Ruin Everything I See starts off with a priceless guitar presence and brooding vocals. The chorus is intense and the lyrics are relatable, pushing the song into the limelight.
When You’re No Around begins with muffled vocals until they rise through. The instrumentals, as usual, are on point and the emotions spill over. Through it all, the band embraces the macabre, and you can’t blame them.
This All Will End is an acoustic driven song. It doesn’t blare out; it stays slow and subtle. As ever, the band salutes the spoken word, and the written word. It’s a captivating listen.
This band based in Columbus, Ohio, tells us their feelings through their songs that heighten the emotions. They should be acclaimed for everything they produce.
