From lift off, this album impacts and resonates, produced by forward-thinkers that describe the world as a shell unprotected. Nothing But Thieves, is this band that has conquered their fears before, but now they’re back in the dark, with broken hearts. Dead Club City is their statement of empathy, their monumental embrace, and it isn’t an album full of missteps, as every song interweaves, and they’re programmed to exude quality and emotion.
The distinctive sound is still there, and the poppy elements engage and aren’t overly hyperbolic, but they imprint the music well, serving up memorable moments. The record that this band is renowned for is Broken Machine, and that record was a perfect depiction of alienation, exuding memorable moments too.
Some songs here go against the grain, and the band conveys through the writing, a hopeless platform, a world jaded and sore. With those quivering pieces of poetry, you’ll get the feeling that you’re reading brilliance that also sparks fury and rage.
There’s 11 songs on this release. Tomorrow Is Closed is a sad song, awash with lyrics that resonate and take us on a journey of self-reflection. These musical aspects are epic, with soaring guitars and biting melodies. Keeping You Around is about an estranged lover, and a kiss that haunts. The song builds up and is a slower contribution, with poppy moments.
Foreign Language sparks open a louder frequency, and the song blows up in a good way. The vocal work is flawless, and the chorus bubbles with intensity, overlapping the guitars in a vital manner. Talking To Myself breaks in slowly, and the music takes time to flourish, as the track is vocal driven. It’s another well thought out song.
Nothing But Thieves has released another emotive record which takes a little more time to appreciate, but when those melodies connect, it blossoms into a true winner.
