Mystery Skulls is a band ready to swim with the big fish, yet is still flying under the radar for some reason. I have a theory (which I’ll address later) but for now I’m here to make an introduction and tell you a bit about their album Forever.
The band, founded in 2011, likes to keep things mysterious. The band profile on Facebook lists the members as “Lord Skull aka Master Skull aka Big Papa Cromedome aka Luis Dubuc.” Confused yet? Good.
The music ain’t that confusing though. It is sensual pop-laced EDM meant to get your pulse racing and help people get busy on the dance floor (and probably later too… just look at the album cover). Sensuality aside, Forever is a catchy album that’s fun to listen to. I’m listening to it right now while writing this review in a coffee shop and that isn’t too awkward.
The band apparently has the chops (or the connections – probably both) to recruit some serious talent to back some of their songs. 90s songstress Brandy makes appearances on “Magic” and “Number 1”, the former of which has a bit of a throwback disco vibe.
The elephant in the room to music critics might be the lyrical cliches or repetitive nature of some of the songs. But really does it matter in this case? This is music created for mass consumption that actually feels fresh. Some of these songs could reach Top 40 status I think. As to why the band isn’t catching on yet, I feel it might be because so many of the tracks are heavily EDM leaning. It doesn’t have the cheese factor of LMFAO nor the classic feel of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” Album ender “Every Note” does have a bit of a New Wave feel though. Why isn’t radio embracing this happy medium? Who knows. I can only imagine how saturated the pool of pop radio applicants is.
For now, I’ll say this – Mystery Skulls wants you to party and not think too hard about the “why.”
