Not a one-trick pony, English band Muse has garnered an avid fan-base since they built their musical machine in 1994, and while they experimented beyond the norm, their sound has always been conceptual and themed on how the world is doing at a particular time. Their album Black Holes And Revelations, which was released in 2006, still offers the faithful an outlet to empower their senses.
Black Holes And Revelations is to this day a powerhouse of a record, created by a band that were in the ascendancy, powered on by a bucket-load of inspiration. The record pushed the band beyond the echelons, making them the most talked about outfit on the planet.
It’s the musical direction that makes the album engaging. Lead singer/guitarist Matt Bellamy didn’t force his beliefs, but studded them cohesively, and proved he had a lot to say. The LP came from a riveting imagination, it came from a place where hope may have been pulverized, though the music didn’t suffer.
We all know Bellamy is a force of nature, a lyricist and purveyor of the guitar, and an all-round genius. Yes, the term genius has been thrown around like confetti in the music industry for years, but Bellamy is one of those one-in-life-time musicians who just gets it.
And that’s not a direct hit for the rest of the band, as they’re supremely talented on a colossal scale, directing their own musical plays as they commit to originality. The album in question, totally showcased Muse as a band to consider also, even though they conjured up hit songs before they dropped the magnum opus in 2006.
The songs that made the album great were Starlight and Soldiers Poem. Those held up against past staples like Plug In Baby. The intricate guitar trickery evolved on Black Holes And Revelations too, gifting the fans a fast-paced, extraordinary collection of tracks.
Also, deep cuts Knights Of Cydonia and Glorious reaped their rewards. Such glittering artistry was portrayed, and the act grew into a force that couldn’t be matched. It was the instrumental bravery that caught the eye, it was the balance and structure that blew minds.
Fundamental in its delivery, Black Holes And Revelations met expectations. It goes down as one in a million, a record crammed full of exceptional poetry and novel-like story, and Muse’s most commendable LP. From the beginning to the swansong, the album is layered with wizardly and surprise. The band must have known they’d hit gold when it was completed, they must have known this was it, and superstardom beckoned.
