It was hard to match Day 1’s energy and excitement but Day 2 stepped up. More people, more action, move movement! Yesterday was incredible and we still have one more day!
Day 2 Recap:
Day 2 got started a little late for us. The Day After‘s Kevin Kirk graciously put us up the night before and leaving the nice A/C, cushioned couch and accommodating hospitality was a bit of a struggle.
When we got there Mapmaker was just setting up for a set that won’t soon be forgotten. Mapmaker melted away expectations compiling fierce soul pulling speed fretwork with slamming rhythms that really got the feet moving.
Thorr-Axe sailed in with their morning star swinging. Elongated soaring screams seared over the non stop pummeling of sonic booms. When they finished you knew it was time to blare the sirens, the deciding battle cry is echoing throughout the land.
By 4pm, the sky had finally cleared up after a few bucket drops of rain, turning beautiful, coincidentally the same time Woozy hit the Stone Tree Stage. Experimental by definition, Woozy simmered and boiled the dry air with picturesque shiny riffs and melodic shared vocals to make this the perfect set to lay in the grass and drift into the reverberating waves, enjoying this beautiful day.
I Dream in Evergreen continued the change of pace by offering Alternative to the straight hard slamming shreds instead focusing on a variety of stylistic catchy movements with vocal unison singing serving as the cherry on top. The crowd was easily the most diverse so far, a testament to their all encompassing sound.
One of the more polished sets came from Funeral Portrait who detonated from the beginning, playing their hit “Casanova (C’est La Vie)” immediately getting the crowd off their feet. They eliminated any barriers, removing monitors making it a more intimate, interactive experience which in turn invoked the most active crowd thus far. It speaks volumes that many fans were able to sing along to lyrics considering this is a band that calls home 8 hours away. This is a band soon to be seen on Warped Tour, they’re extremely enjoyable and marketable band who should soon be blowing up. They can really rally a party, their stage presence infects excitement. It was truly one hell of a performance. When the last riff ends, I’m fucking giddy. Wow.
Don’t Call It A Comeback couldn’t even be seen there was so many up close and personal fans. Lead singer Cody Almond only inspired more chaos jumping on the crowd which got so elevated he was practically smashed against the top of the pavilion. More followed his lead as he continued to whip the crowd down a path of frenzy orchestrating a sing along where seemingly everyone knew the lyrics (not bad for a reunion show). The fun didn’t stop as he walked into the crowd, pulling them closer with charismatic pleads and hand gestures. I hope he doesn’t ever get any weird thoughts in his head because he’d be one hell of a cult leader.
ForeverAtLast brought another polished set to the Rue Morgue Stage. It’s easy to see why they had such a massive crowd. Lead singer Brittany Paris is characteristically interactive with a poppy face that turns viciously killer when she drops that expansive range down for blood curling breakdowns. She really lets her gorgeous voice carry and goddamn does the band throw down a furiously addictive tempo playing with breakdowns to inject originality, eliminating staleness and keeping fresh. Their feverish energy kept the place really jumping for most of their shorter set (drum issues were the cause). They preyed on that closing with some riffs from Rage Against the Machine’s “Bulls on Parade” to finish with an extra umpf.
A quick stop by Messes was astonishing. Messes couldn’t be contained by the Musical Family Stage as their fan base flooded out the in-line ropes that foolishly tried to contain them. Cutting through the entire festival, people continued to flock to the holy ground like bugs to a bright light. It was truly an astounding set.
To Kill A Monster closed the Rue Morgue with an emotional set that shook you to the core. Some bands throw on a performance, this one raged on pure passion to drive the night. Internal ambiguity can cause some bands to break, this one threw it all on the line for you. When the set was abruptly finished there was a moment of silence. No one was too sure what was next. The band left stage and immediately hit the deck. They were dead, exhausted. A week of turmoil all built up and exasperation was left behind by a set that went 3 albums deep (“Sexy Girl” was resurrected) and rocked a sea of hardcore fans. At the end everyone sat there. Not quite being able to put a finger on what just happened. They knew they had seen something unique but not quite sure where to place it. That uncertainty isn’t soon to subside with drummer Mike St. Laurent leaving to pursue career goals. In the end though, none of that matters because of what transpired on that stage. A band pulled it together for the fans and gave them every single ounce they had. What more can you really ask?
News: As previously reported Anzio had dropped, they were scheduled for 3pm at Stone Tree Studios. Great band though, I would still highly encourage checking them out. Tucker Drummond has also had to drop. His set was supposed to be at 2pm on the Sam Ash Stage. Vita Bassa has had to cancel, they were playing the Musical Family Stage at 3pm instead Monterrey will be playing. One Day Steady will be replacing Almost Heroes at 4:30 at the Rue Morgue Stage.
Weather reared it’s ugly head late last night forcing the canceling of the screenings of Friday Night Frights. Stupid weather, I was really looking forward to it and thought it was really interesting, creative way to watch a film under the lights at a festival. Today looks like more of the same, a nice day finishing with thunderstorms because why not.
