Moodring Shines Bright With Their Latest EP, Your Light Fades Away

It’s been a little over a year since Moodring released their sophomore album, Stargazer, in the summer of 2022. Often times when a band releases new material so soon after their last release some might question the quality or possibility of it being rushed or just deemed “not good enough” for the album. However, the tracks present on their latest EP, Your Light Fades Away are anything but an afterthought.

With the release of Your Light Fades Away Moodring pushes their boundaries and move forward with a sound that is a natural progression from Stargazer to now. However, progression is oft met with opposition which can take the strangest of forms. Earlier this year Moodring announced that they planned to tour, but about a month ago vocalist Hunter Young posted on the band’s social that due to ongoing health issues the band would not be joining the tour. However, there are plans to continue to write, produce and release music as his health allows.

Your Light Fades Away is marketed as an EP, but feels more like a maxi-single as it is only 3 tracks and runs just shy of 11 minutes from start to finish. However, despite the short runtime it packs a punch. Upon thorough listening you can find solid comparisons to Deftones and Loathe laced throughout, but Moodring uses these comparisons/influences to their full advantage. Opening track “SHI=DEATH” embraces digital elements both musically and vocally as effects are used to enhance the gravitas that Young presents. “BLACK_WAVE” follows and bends the sound in a more melodic way than its predecessor while still managing to keep itself rooted in the heavier elements that might be on the outer fringe of numetal. “WOULDYOUWAITFORME” initially takes a down shift before forging full force ahead while maintaining the same audible aesthetic that is present on the rest of the EP.

Overall, Your Light Fades Away is a remarkable presentation of a band with promise that has evolved organically in such a short amount of time between releases. Let’s just hope that Your Light Fades Away is not the final light we see from Moodring.

Your Light Fades Away is out July 14, 2023 via UNFD and will be available on major streaming and digital retailers.
