I didn’t even realize there was a farewell show tonight.
I was kinda mulling around the Short North and found my way to Brothers Drake. I picked up some noodles and sat down to chill. Realizing my phone was about to die I went back home and brought a laptop.
And awkwardly sat at a laptop the entire show.
The crowd was in full force tonight. There’s alot of excitement in there. I remember first catching Maria at an open mic at Woodlands Tavern. It wasn’t that long ago, and now she’s leaving our fair city.
Oliver Oak I’ve now seen a fair few times, thanks to my old bandmate Jack Doran always naming them as a personal favorite. Erin Mason used to live a few houses away and used to frequent my DIY space accordingly.
They are characterized, much like every other band on this bill, by tight arrangements, a high level of musicality, and a sense of style thats unique and timeless.
Counterfeit Madison rocked it. She has an amazing voice, a great command of the piano, and had a cool ensemble of musicians backing her for her performance. This was the first time I’ve ever seen her play. I liked her page, she’s now at 1,000 likes (you’re welcome!).
Closing the night, Maria had a quiet, attentive crowd, at times pin-drop silence, interrupted by uproarious applause. After her final song, she was given an ultra long applause. An ovation? And was coaxed into doing one final song. The set was permitted by anecdotes of her recent tour with Counterfeit Madison.
Maria has a smooth as velvet voice and honest songwriting style. Between her and Counterfeit Madison, it made for a very powerful closer to the night.
