lonely the brave – this days war: timeless songs for the broken

So many people in the music world were astounded that newcomers Lonely The Brave released a juggernaut record as their debut in 2014. The English collective wowed the crowd and rock fans with a mature album that stretched beyond the norm and the typical formula many bands used. The Days War was a dark-edged record too, one that had songs which hit the grain in terms of theme and subject.

The Days War managed to create a startling atmosphere with its brooding lyricism and chord progression, breaking boundaries and enforcing a sincere story. Some of the tracks conveyed bitterness, mental health issues, and even disease. This showed the act weren’t shy in talking about such issues, and the record gave them an outlet to do so.

Lead singer David Jakes had stretched his vocal cords to the limit, but he also could calm it all down convincingly. The man behind the microphone connected with the faithful sincerely, and his lyrical genius was commended with grace.

Every tone and melody were integrated fearlessly too, and the record wasn’t optimised for the mainstream, but it did break through and made Lonely The Brave a band to consider. As mentioned, many rock fans were overawed by the overall standard of the band’s debut.

The standout songs were Backroads, which was dark in subject, and The Blue, The Green, which detailed a cancer battle. All tracks dealt with darkness, sadness and heartbreak, creating a story which was eventful and fascinating.

The production of the album was flawless. Every melody counted, every sound was needed, and the emotional connection was seamless. The band certainly broke conventions, and their sound flourished beyond the compare. This Days War entertained but also showed that music could become this aid for people who felt alone and in a rut, and needed a flicker of light.
