Logan Pilcher Reimagines “Always Mine”

Artists redoing their older work is nothing new – bands like Thrice and Copeland have reworked entire albums, Taylor Swift has been reclaiming her catalog in similar fashion and tacking on additional tracks, and many smaller bands take songs off their early releases and put them onto later albums. Logan Pilcher has returned, this time solo, to redo one of his most well-known tracks.

The title is “Always Mine (But Different)” and it’s a prime example of truth in advertising. Pilcher has reworked the track with bolder, fuller production, new lyrics, and arguably more energy than the original. That’s not to say the previous song was bad. Instead, I’m reminded a bit of Car Seat Headrest redoing an album because it didn’t encapsulate the full vision. This feels similar – this may not necessarily be the canonical version of the track, but at the very least it feels like the other side to a sonic yin-yang. In fact, the two are actually paired as a sort of double-single.

After seeing Coyco live last year, this track is definitely tamer in some respects. The studio replaces the band – and the band is definitely dynamic. Even so, Pilcher’s abilities as a songwriter aren’t lost here. The end result is professional but not overdone. It’s accessible, but not in any sort of vapid way. Pilcher continues onward at an unrelenting pace as he works on his new album, and while this might simply be a one-off in that process, it demonstrates his continued growth as an independent artist.
