kody west – circles

Everyone wants to implement fresh hope into the world, but it’s not possible for everyone to feel joyous when the world goes dark, when the pain becomes too much, and the lights have no room to shine. Hope hasn’t been a viable source for many years, as the world has gone through so much turmoil, so many transitions. Obstacles are everywhere, and when there’s a glint of something good, it usually gets suppressed by something more sinister.

There’s this great singer/songwriter who wants to see the world become a idyllic space, a place where bread is torn between friends, and where people can feel safe. Kody West is this singer, this enigma, but a man embarking on telling us his story. His lyrics are razor sharp, and he tells us that his world isn’t free from implications.

Circles is West’s story-driven LP. 10 songs worth their weight in gold, sad songs describing his descent into depressive notions. He shouts at times, and he bellows out for some newfound faith to help him through his deep pain, and there are electric guitars carrying these empowering vocals.

Buried Alive starts the record off with powerful guitar parts and attitude. West watches on and he describes the harshness of the world, and he finds it hard to breathe. It’s a commanding opening. Falling opens with West’s vocal work, and he’s again on the ropes, and dreams of living amongst the clouds. The chorus is infectious here. Middle showcases West’s vocals in a new light, and they’re so well kept and used in such a melodic fashion. Again, this song confirms sadness. Wait For You is another well rounded track, full of brilliant instrumentals and wordplay. West is such an intelligent musician, pushing himself musically and lyrically.

Kody West wants the world to be something to behold, but he knows it can’t all be beautiful. His work is admirable too.
