Hotel of the Laughing Tree has a storied history, from its roots as a folksy effort into a progressive/post-hardcore flavored outfit with a short stint on a record label. The group’s lineup has evolved with their sound, but Hotel is back to their core roster of AJ Estrada, Brandon Peterson, Neil Scalesse, and Jonathan Streker. But on “Irish Goodbye,” the quartet goes one step further, bringing back longtime collaborator Victor DeJesus (horns) and a whole crowd of friends and fans contributing gang vocals for bombastic effect. Sometimes Hotel is subdued and pensive; other times, such as this track, they barrel out of the gate with an indomitable degree of fanfare. “Irish Goodbye” manages to both feel like a lean into the post-reunion Hotel sound (which, among other things, seems to borrow from Motown and disco) while hearkening back toward their riff-heavy early catalog.
This, of course, is no coincidence: that track has been sealed away for a number of years and was resurrected for the band’s new LP, A Mountain Fastness. It only made sense to pull together the troops for a track full of so much classic Hotel energy, and the result is a polished and energetic movement that adds yet another layer of dynamics to the new record.
Faraway Friends saw the unexpected return of Hotel in a completely remote capacity, with the members exchanging files digitally and recording everything from home. A Mountain Fastness is much the same, albeit with a bit more experience this time around. Drummer Neil Scalesse has once again brought his prowess at the kit to the table, and this alone has given the new songs a distinct energy compared to the previous LP. And while Estrada’s lyrics continue to give the songs an air of mystery, there is no puzzle in recognizing the sheer talent these four men bring to the table. Check out “Irish Goodbye” below and be sure to check out the full album when it releases Friday (3/28).
