Hot Mulligan – Why Would I Watch

Hot Mulligan stretches out for comfort on their album Why Would I Watch, but they’re pushed to their limitations, as this collection explores dark themes. We expect melancholy from the band that created post-emo, and we expect them to put together songs that resonate, tracks that detail hopeless moments, and broken hearts.

It is a technical album too, with the band putting in the work. The instrumentals are crisp and clear, executed with care and attentiveness, properly implemented to create a melting pot of styles. As well as this, the band has upped their game lyrically, describing their lives and woes, their burning desires and the significance of growing up.

We all know we’re going to get a well-rounded album by Hot Mulligan, but this record really outclasses past records. It has this rage, this automatic appeal, even in the darkness, and that shows the band’s tireless work. They haven’t written off the negativity either, which shows they’re still hurting, though, this it doesn’t matter as it gives people something to relate to.

These 12 songs all have uncanny names. And I Smoke is a emo in its execution, with well-rounded instrumentals and fast-paced vocals. The lyrics describe hopelessness and a craving for a way out of a undesirable place. No Shoes In The Coffee Shop (Or Socks) is a pressing song with an infectious riff. The lyrics are intelligent as always, and the band delivers yet again a sad song with appeal.

Betty is a poignant song which is acoustically driven. It shows a different side to Hot Mulligan, as all the tension strips away. Gans Media Retro Games is another straight up guitar song, and the act describes being drunk and anxious, senseless and broken. Again, it’s a pessimistic track with dark undertones.

Hot Mulligan serves up a record that eclipses past albums. The pessimism still runs riot, but the music is well crafted.
