Courageous and sombre, this EP confirms the masterful talent that is Heather Sommer. The singer/ songwriter conveys through her songs, bitterness and woes, and it isn’t all flashy here, as the tracks dazzle, but also describes heartache. And Sommer is extremely good and chronicles her desires and her sincere thoughts through the art that is lyricism. They aren’t sugar-coated; they aren’t pretentious, they’re real, but not wrapped in optimism. Negativity becomes an apparent feature on this release, but it doesn’t derail the wonder.
Sommer knows how to construct intelligent songs, tracks pressing down on problems and instances. Throughout her EP, One Size Fits All, seems to declare war against someone who has wronged the singer, who has taken pieces of her heart, who has taken liberties. Sommer describes these moments through her words and intellectual responses. Habits are explored also, and friends seem to be figments.
Yes this EP is more poppy than punk, but there are elements of punk between the lines. Sommer voice perfectly arouses the punk senses, and her vocals would fit seamlessly in the scene. She has the lyrical chops too, and some of her poetry comes straight from her broken, but sincere heart.
Chameleon starts off the record in a snappy fashion. Sommer sings with intent, rapping about the state of love. She awaits the backlash. One Size Fits All has substance, creating a stylish backdrop, and Sommer sings about beauty being superficial. On Demand manages to create a punk vibe, as the guitar takes centre stage. Sommer angrily describes a damning relationship here.
Heather Sommer is a stylish singer/songwriter with undoubted intelligence. She sings about the world; she sings about normality, but her songs are far from being mundane, as they’re truly insightful and sincere.
