Green Day’s LP Nimrod has turned 25, and it has been hailed as one of the band’s most accessible albums. This 25th anniversary edition has many B-sides for the diehards too, and the production has been elevated throughout. When the album was released way back in 1997, many fans were hooked in by the arrangements and the unconventional lyricism by lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong. It also showed that Armstrong could pull at the emotions with smash hit Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life).
Nimrod wasn’t a instant hit, or an album that had gone up against the brilliance of 1994’s Dookie, but it had its own characteristics. Armstrong, Dirnt (Bass) and Tre Cool (Drums) pushed themselves musically, and they did make such a pulsating and gratifying sound. On this 25th anniversary edition, we get to hear rarities such as Tre Polka and You Irritate Me, which in truth aren’t blockbuster tracks, but are there to entice the fanatics.
With this edition, there’s a set of live tracks which include smash hits Nice Guys Finish Last, and the originality of Redundant. The inclusion of these tracks will increase the interest, as they show what Green Day’s live performances were like at the peak of the 90s.
The anniversary box-set includes a vinyl copy of the album, which will sound epic on a record player, and there is a disc that showcases the band at the renowned Electric Factory in Philadelphia which took place in 1997.
The anniversary edition of Nimrod is a must buy for the Green Day purists. Though not their most audacious record by any means, it still holds up as a record brimming in hooks, sneers, and lyrical magic.
