Grand Motel makes their grand debut

By Ryan G

Grand Motel are a two-piece “post emo” band with one of the best descriptors I’ve ever heard. The duo writes “Nebraska-based emo tunes to not conform to the patterns of the world to.”

One of my favorite verses states, “Do not conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” A music-inspired remix might read, do not be shaped by the typical emo-revival stuff but be open to groups like this challenging your thinking. Hey, God works in all things, right? I’m unironically saying God is present in emo music right now.

Anyway… what I like about this band is they take their time with each song, but they still manage to pump out a catchy quality. It’s not often a song over 5 minutes long manages to be instantly addictive. Grand Motel has managed to accomplish this twice. If you happen to start with the second single – stick with it! The intro is long but the payoff is worth it.

The band’s first release “A Ghost…” has a satisfying payoff as well. The band does an effective job at faking you out with the end of the track. Every single time I’ve listened, I think the 3:30 mark is the end and I have to check. Maybe one day I’ll learn.

We can’t wait to see what’s next for the Hastings, Nebraska project. I’m really hoping they decide to make the drive to Audiofeed Festival this year. Maybe we’ll see an appearance on the impromptu stage.
