Enter Shikari – The Mindsweep

By Ryan G

Prepare Photoshop for this meme. One does not simply put Enter Shikari into a genre.  They are an original electronic rock (ish) band all their own. Their new album is perhaps their most diverse to date.   From heavy breakdowns to melodic choruses, fast to slow tempos, this album is perhaps their best to date.  And that’s saying something coming from someone who has been a fan since first hearing them on Madden 2008.

With parts that resemble bands like Thursday, melodies reminiscent of Thrice and the ferociousness of From Autumn To Ashes, fans of the earlier 2000s post hardcore and screamo that shaped our current music scene.   The electronic parts are so present and fierce that they could show up at an EDM show and destroy.   While it lacks the original heaviness that made me love Enter Shikari and the easy hook that made me love them in the first place,  there is still a lot to like about this record.  It may not be my go to but it’s not an album to ignore.  And it could even be your new favorite album.

Editor’s Thoughts: After being initially underwhelmed by this artist, I’m questioning where I’ve been all of these years after listening to The Mindsweep in full. The album isn’t quite a home run but there’s something for everyone on there – especially heavy music fans. This album is club ready and I love it. Indulgent at times perhaps, but in all the right ways.

Score: 3.5/5
