There’s something about San Souci, the debut EP from Massachusetts based Cape Crush, that is equal parts fun and enigmatic.
For a relatively new band, Cape Crush presents a well rounded and polished indie rock sound that is sure to turn a few heads. Blending rock, folk and some slight celtic elements add to the enigmatic mystique. Not that the band is trying to be mysterious, but it is refreshingly profound to see the band making the waves that they are in such a short time since the release of their debut EP (April 14th).
San Souci opens with “Avec Souci” which is upbeat and somewhat poppy in nature that creates the fun atmosphere that is a constant on the EP as a whole. The track puts the band in full presentation mode as it gives a solid glimpse of what can be expected musically and vocally. The track concludes with some dueling vocals that sound like they might be being done in a round which embodies the enigmatic nature of the band. “San Souci” follows and keeps the more up tempo beat and has somewhat of a slight punk feel to it in the delivery of some of the guitar work. The track is rather brief, but concludes with the line; “I would like to take you outside and stick a fork right through your [expletive] thigh.” It’s a rather abrupt phrasing, but it has never been delivered in such an elegant manner.
“Sandwich Wars” and “Sunny & Boone” continue the power pop stylings of the EP that are delivered both elegantly and poignantly all while continuing the EP to not take itself too seriously. “Mother’s Day” and “Del Water Gap” bring things to a close without losing momentum while still managing to down shift a bit in a couple of parts.
From start to finish San Souci is a fun ride that well worth the 20 minute runtime. While that may seem brief it is full of intricate moments of musical ability and ambition that is sure to help make Cape Crush a band to remember and revisit.
San Souci is available now on all major streaming and digital platforms via Ancient Injury Records or physical copies can be ordered here.
