It was only a matter of time, but caffeine lovers can rejoice at last! Emery, formed in South Carolina in 2001 and currently based in Seattle, have been mainstays in the rock and post-hardcore industry. Perhaps even more impressive is their innovation when it comes to integrating podcasts, crowdfunding, and a host of other things into the sort of cinematic universe around the band. The band formed the BadChristian imprint which served as a hub for many things peripheral to the band’s music, and they’ve even rolled out their own form of cryptocurrency.
But somehow, the band haven’t dug into their local market as well as you might expect. Thankfully, that’s all about to change.
In an exclusive press release, the band noted they are excited to start renovating a formal vintage clothing store into perhaps the hottest (no pun intended) coffee shop in Seattle – NotSoBadCoffee. The location will also include several desks and offices available for rent as part of the BadCoworking arm. The locale will allegedly boast a focus on artists and musicians, including a stage for live performances and open mic events, planned mixers, and use of of the BadCoworking area for classes and events throughout the week. While the band is still figuring out the exact details on the pricing structure, early estimates seem to indicate renting a shared desk will start around $500/month, a dedicated desk will be somewhere around $938, and a dedicated office will run you $1859.
“We plan on using locally-sourced milk and we’re very conscious of making sure the beans we get will be the highest quality so we’re still in talks with some folks all over,” Devin Shelton explained. “We want to do right by people at the end of the day. This is a big venture but we’re all excited.”
As expected, the band will feature their own unique drinks. The list isn’t finalized yet, but some ideas include “Studying Baristology”, “The Secret”, “Closed Eyes, Open Mouths”, and “You Wanted It”. There are plans to include dairy-free and caffeine-free options out the gate as well. NotSoBadCoffee will also carry a standard fare of breakfast staples and also have sandwiches and burgers for folks with a bit more of an appetite later in the day.
While this undertaking is certainly bold, it’s no less odd than when the band sold their own type of shoe by any stretch. If anything, it’s exactly what the Seattle market is looking for and the band has just the personality to pull this off well.
NotSoBadCoffee is slated to open this August, which admittedly seems like a bit of a rush. We will keep you informed on new developments, and Emery plan on announcing more updates soon on their website. There will be discounts provided on drinks and food for all Emeryland members as well.
