Editorial: when trends go good/bad

By Ryan G

Recently, I read an article that lamented the over saturation of the internet with mp3 blogs.  What is an mp3 blog? Have you seen a site where people post over and over their newest song finds for the world to play? Chances are you have – a lot.  Micro-blogging and sharing site Tumblr has made this phenomenon really easy in recent years. By the way, this isn’t what I am tuned UP is, if you are just landing on this article by a search or whatever.

The point is, the editorial I found said that this over saturation music blogs (but especially mp3 blogs) has resulted in people becoming fixed on continuously finding the next big thing.  Hence, the implication is that people are continually moving onto better things and never truly supporting one artist. Given I am tuned UP’s focus on trends, I figured I needed to address this apparent, well, trend.

This editorial isn’t meant to be a mission statement, but the tagline “forward thinking music commentary” is just that – reviews and commentary on events in the music industry from the perspective that the industry is changing quicker than ever before.  Bands are never reported on and then disregarded for the sake of being disregarded.  One could even argue I have been late to the bandwagon a few times (just look at my articles on Bon Iver, for instance).  So yes, I do report regularly on established artists that are actually good.  That is, I do reviews and commentary on interesting events – no copy/paste of press releases or reporting of band drama here – there’s plenty of that elsewhere on the internet.  What artists and fans alike need though is awareness of events that are shaping the music industry in new and innovative ways.  But, people want to know whats good and relevant without getting into a lot of fluff, so we cover the essentials but keep things short.

This is an exciting time to be a music fan.  Knowing what’s trending is key to experiencing the changing industry to its fullness.  But, support whom you like! This site isn’t meant to promote fads – its to show which artists are GOOD and which events in the biz you should be paying attention to.  Happy listening, and if you like what you read – spread it around! That’s how most things get around these days – word of mouth!
