Dry Bones – Father Figure

Over the past 12 years I have lived in a quite a few states and it always seems to be in or close to a city/town known for its music scene. The two the really stick out are Chapel Hill, NC and Nashville, TN. Both of these places are music hubs, great music and even greater venues. Four years ago I moved to Columbus. The only things I knew of Columbus were OSU football, The Crew and Rascal Flatts. After only a few months here I discovered that this city was a hotbed for music. Over the last few years I have embraced this scene as my own. The thing about it this every genre is well represented. With that have been said I recently came across a young post-hardcore band called Dry Bones.

Dry Bones started out in 2011 under the name Secret’s Out. They released an EP under that name and soon changed their name to Dry Bones. They are a 4 piece consisted of Ethan Sipes on vocals, Jack Sipes on drums, Ben Martindale on guitar/vocals and Brandon Stith on bass. Their latest release, Father Figure was put out by local label Delayed Gratification Records.

When looking at their influences one will see bands such as Pianos Became the Teeth, Frameworks, La Dispute and Touche Amore. As a fan of these bands I hear the influence from them all. This is a band that has done their homework. The first track,” Garage Door”, on Father Figure is a good introduction to what to expect from the album. Right away we are exposed to the chaos that is this band. The guitars on this track are insane, some of the best I’ve heard in this genre. The other aspect that caught me off guard was the vocals. There is a good balance of screaming and singing. I feel that when there is a healthy balance that it adds depth to the song. If you have read any of my reviews you know that I am big on lyrics. The lyrics in “Garage Door” are some of the most honest lyrics you will here in this genre. As the album goes on it gets stonger and stronger. One of my favorite songs on the album is “The Bite” which could serve as a break in the album. It is at the halfway point and is only 1:36 long. Have you ever heard the expression “good things come in small packages”? Well this song is just that. It has a slight Being As An Ocean feel to it and these guys pull it off well. I listened to it a few times before I moved on. The last song, “Back Door” is another powerful track. It seems to contrast with the first track, Garage Door”. The subject matter is one that I feel we all can relate to at times. Sometimes it’s nice to get a little reminder that everything is going to be okay. We just need to have a little faith.

After hearing this album I’m looking forward to see what these guys do next. This was a solid full-length. They are only going to get better and that is scary. And they have a killer live show to go along with it. If you have never seen them live, you can check them out at Double Happiness on June 29th with Comrades and Servants. See you in the pit.

Score: 4/5
