Code Orange stir the emotions with The Above. A band of rebels, they silence the doubters, breaking through with a crash of aggression. Since their inception, the act has created songs which draw on past expectances, extreme pain, and hopelessness. The Above is an experimental album, sourced from minds connected to mental instability.
When listening on to this release, everything unravels, stories become a mainstay, a base for the tension. The band know they’re functioning on their own battered emotions too, and on The Above you can hear their grievances come alive. And This record isn’t for everyone. It isn’t a smooth listen, as it’s a technical beast, but it has its moments of brilliance. Every scream means something, the vocals mean urgency, and the lyrics are statements of soullessness.
Never Far Apart starts the record. It’s an unnerving track, bolstering the album. The clean vocals emerge gracefully, but it’s those intense sounds that curdle the blood. The Mask Of Insanity Slips is a blistering track that delivers an aura, a belting chorus which offers a melting pot of styles.
Snapshot strengthens the record and is a song bound in screams and plotlines. It has a story attached to it, and that story grows and blossoms even in the dark. The crushing instrumentals increase the friction.
Code Orange has developed yet another record that isn’t smooth sailing, but the band still knows how to bask in their own torment.
