The album received critical acclaim and was praised for its social commentary and Rose’s songwriting skills. Rose is known for energetic live performances, they’ve has also been featured in several music festivals, including SXSW, Newport Folk Festival, and Bonnaroo. A decade after their debut album, welcome their fifth self-produced album The Art of Forgetting.

After experiencing a string of tragic events, Caroline Rose took some time to reconnection and grow. As a result of a painful breakup, Rose began to explore their inner self and unexpectedly uncovered suppressed childhood memories. During this period of time, Rose received voicemails from their grandmother, who was losing her sanity. These experiences are incorporated throughout the album, providing moments of relief and hope amidst a story of a person who may have forgotten how to love themselves and is in the process of rediscovering this ability. “Every time I make an album, I’ll come out of it learning a lot about myself. Now I look back and see the healing of a wound. I feel like a new version of myself. I think one for the better”.

Her album begins with a voicemail from her grandmother, setting the tone for the emotional journey that lies ahead. Rose used equipment and media that embody the qualities of fading memories to produce the album. Using instruments that naturally deteriorate over time, such as wooden and string instruments, voices, tape, and granular synthesis.

The initial layers were recorded in their home studio, and they spent about a year experimenting with those recordings by chopping them into loops, creating modular percussion, and building additional parts around them. The resulting soundscape is highly dynamic, featuring layers of vocal arrangements ranging from Balkan-influenced yawps to Gregorian autotune choirs, acoustic instrumentation that has been chopped and mangled to sound like a glitching memory, and dreamlike synths that push and pull against each other.

Overall, Caroline Rose has established themselves with a versatile sound and unique voice in the indie music scene. Their latest album is a testament to their growth and resilience. The Art of Forgetting is a deeply personal and emotional journey that showcases Rose’s ability to blend genres and craft poignant lyrics that speak to the human experience.
