Calmgrove delivers intensity on their EP True Color, and they spread their wisdom far and wide, executing these songs with an emotional connection. Pop punk has so many bands under its wing, so when delving into this record, you may feel hesitant, but don’t be, as this act has really directed their work with complete honesty and quality.
It isn’t a sub-standard record by any stretch, as the lyrics convey stories which are evocative and weaved strongly. The band doesn’t go for purity and they definitely don’t cover everything in roses or vibrancy, as the undercurrent of trauma pushes through, delivering a bittersweet and poignant experience.
Breaking through the motions is difficult on a daily basis and trying to even get up in the morning takes immense bravery for some, and when the shine comes through the gaps in the curtains, sometimes it can be too much. This band also takes sadness and elevates its importance, and there are some emo elements too, shuddering in when the music hits.
Rhythm and melody is significant on True Colour, and they intertwine with synergy. The guitar moments are pop punk gold, and they are heavily apparent as we expect. True Color opens the record bashfully, and the lyrics explain shattered optimism and soured love. The band here looks for clarity but is hit with obscurity.
Jade starts with intense guitar riffs and moments when it all could explode. The act again exposes the tired love for what it is, and they want to feel fully alive in a world that looks drained.
Tossing In My Sleep is a sad song, which has a sturdy guitar presence and strong percussion. The band again, focus on the downsides, and they’re subsiding deeply into a void. Daydream is another poignant song that triggers memories, and the act feels the storm brewing in their hearts and minds.
Calmgrove is a talented unit that wants to feel a rush of energy and positivity, but they know life isn’t flawless.
