Biffy Clyro are masters at creating diverse records full of raucous instrumentals and detailed lyricism. The Scottish band has never really faltered on any of their albums. Yes, there have been some loose songs, but throughout their catalogue there is greatness. The 2007 magnum opus Puzzle was a masterminded juggernaut, a record that proudly placed the band on a top pedestal and pushed them into the limelight. Puzzle bloomed, offering fans songs drenched in hurt and powerful lyrics which resonated.
The band’s record A Celebration In Endings is far from being a safe affair. Broken hearted singer Simon Neil blesses us with powered vocals and smooth lyrics, words intelligently weaved, showcasing his talent on a wider scale. Throughout the compendium, pessimism is explored too, as these lyrics don’t always appear joyous; they’d splinter into skin if they were smashed by a hammer. On the ropes, Neil also seems misunderstood, carrying burdens, and is disengaged from the world.
A Celebration Of Endings offers melody above abrasiveness on many of the songs. Subtlety appears to be given the spotlight here as the band believes in their songwriting credentials and that shows they’re accustomed to taking risks. These risks have paid off, as the slower tracks pave way for a tranquil listen even while those lyrics hit hard. On “The Champ,” Simon Neil sings about lives falling by the wayside. His voice is clear and decisive, then that guitar presence becomes a great contrast to the somber lyricism. “Space” pulls on softer notes, conveying love as a potion. It’s a melodic heart-puller. “The Pink Limit” charges up the album as the chorus bursts through, displaying Biffy Clyro’s instrumental power. “Opaque” is a lyrical piece of truth, and the band shows their hurt here, shredding the rule book as they have done throughout their careers. It dodges clichés and empowers—all strung together with clear cut acoustics.
Biffy Clyro have showed that they don’t adhere to rules and the norm. On A Celebration Of Endings they push their talents to a whole new level.
