The Athens, OH transplants to Columbus band She Bears have been on the Tuned Up radar for quite awhile. I first became acquainted with vocalist Stephen Pence as a regular at Kobo (RIP), where he bartended. I lived nearby on Tompkins Street, in Old North Columbus, Ohio.
There isn’t a whole lot of flair to She Bears’ performances. They are what they are, and they are comfortable and confident in who they are. This has allowed them to nurture a small but loyal fanbase that has remained consistent over the years. This band gave me context to the term “slacker rock” – a term who’s definition I’m still trying to define. But the paradoxically laid back yet assertive rock that She Bears brings to the table seems to fit.
Great Lakes Tidal Wave takes the familiarity of the band and layers in some additional nuggets, that come across more like pleasant discoveries than flair that jumps out at you. Some Theremin here. Some glockenspiel there. And, as the band puts it, a way of showcasing “rich sonic textures.”
We are honored to premiere an album from a band that has played a role in the Tuned Up story over the years. Take a listen and let us know what you think! Then, follow them on Facebook.
The band is releasing their album tomorrow night, July 22 at Rumba Café in Columbus with help from Cliffs, Waif, and Yellow Paper Planes. Showtime is 8:30 PM with a $5 cover.
