Maranda recently moved from Cincinnati Ohio to pursue higher education at Columbus State Community College, studying early childhood education. She’s also a big proponent of DIY, and plays around the city under the name Sharktooth.
TUNED UP: You work with a lot of festivals as a side gig, doing henna. How did you get involved with that?
Sharktooth: Well, Cass has been working with our tribe for the last 6 or 7 years. One day he had a gig and he asked me to keep him company. But when I got there I sort of snapped into “work mode” and started a system that helped them out so much, they gave me a job. This is my second year with Love Harvest, and you should check out their instagram @ loveharvest_bodyart
TUNED UP: I know Cass’s [boyfriend’s] mom is also active in the DIY scene, has that been an influence on what you do?
Sharktooth: I don’t say this lightly when I say that Cass’s mom is the man! She and Cass took me in for at least a year and when they did, oh man, it’s like I transformed. They showed me all the best music and good books and movies and really molded me. So, I’d say yeah.
TUNED UP: Who are you listening to right now?
Sharktooth: Right now I’ve been digging Utopia Real Estate
TUNED UP: Whats your relationship with the washtub bass?
Sharktooth: Oh dude. I don’t even know where to start. So everyone was just playing all at the same time one night, so I hopped on washtub. Never played the thing before in my life. But as soon as I got my hand on the string, I wailed. I think I play washtub better than I play guitar honestly. It was fate.
TUNED UP: When can we see you play next?
Sharktooth: You can actually find me at The House with No Name tomorrow night! I’ll be playing in the Round and possibly surprising a few of you.
I’m excited to see how things develop for Maranda, especially having seen ‘the spirit take her over’ the second she picked up a washtub bass.
