Show Preview: Kate Tempest, Pussy Riot, Massive Attack (Sept 25th) at Banksy’s Dismaland in Somerset UK

A breakdown of the events currently booked at Dismaland, a new Banksy installation in Weston-super-Mare ( ‘Weston-super-Mare is a seaside resort, town and civil parish in Somerset, England… located on the Bristol Channel coast, 18 miles southwest of Bristol…)

You have probably heard of Banksy, the British artist who delves in forward thinking street art installations that make the international headlines.

He has created a ‘bemusement park’ in Weston-super-Mare, a seaside resort in Somerset, England called Dismaland and its filled with his works.

Its an interesting concept, and this space is hosting a series of events. I decided write a short preview of one of those dates, as well as pass along the full calendar.

Sept 25th – Kate Tempest + Pussy Riot + Massive Attack @ Dismaland

Kate Tempest:
I listened to her 2014 album Everybody Down, first track ‘Marshall Law’.

This is British hip-hop, with a dystopian electronic sound, and an 80’s bent. I hear thick 80’s synth + drums.

I’m always a fan of British hip-hop; what’s interesting about Kate Tempest is she reminds me of the delivery of The Streets on ‘Original Pirate Material’, but also Massive Attack’s delivery on ‘100th Window’.

Pussy Riot:
I listened to their 2015 album ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’

Track: ‘Wont Get Fooled Again’

I glance over the track list and realize this disc is a set of covers of older classic songs. You’ll see the likes of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and ‘Blitzkreig Bop’ next to ‘Rebel Rebel’ and more. I don’t know why they didn’t put out any originals, but I like their covers of these songs.

“Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist punk rock protest group based in Moscow… variable membership of approximately 11 women…”

Massive Attack:

I have listened to Massive Attack immensely. I was lucky in that I was in a music store in Japan in 2003 and picked up a copy of 100th window simply because I thought it sounded rad. I’ve listened to that album thousands upon thousands of times since. Their last release was Heligoland in 2010. These guys make rad music, but they havent active in awhile. Thats why its raising my eyebrows to see them on a bill in 2015.

If you haven’t listened to Massive Attack, its smooth and grimy trip-hop, a precursor to British Grime. Intelligent spoken word and eerily sung haunting vocals over computer driven electronic beats, eschewing a sense of heightened awareness and perhaps even paranoia as well as general badass-ness, fitting for movie soundtracks and more.

I guess I’m going to try to make a visit to England this year.
