It’s a little rare these days, but I love a good noisy rock band. Note that I didn’t say hard rock or metal to you casual listeners out there. There is a distinction – just a friendly reminder from your neighborhood reviewer. Anyway, I checked out White Reaper on a whim like I do a lot these days. In the past I’ve found in enjoyment in bands like Iceage (who made several best of year end lists last year) or SHVS (a local favorite ’round these parts) but I haven’t found that noise-garage-rock-whatchamacallit band that hit that same spot til now. That band is White Reaper.
With all the coverage I’m seeing of this EP it seriously baffles me why they aren’t more well known (something I think all too often). This Louisville trio doesn’t really follow a formula on their Polyvinyl Records released EP – they just kinda let things happen. From the angry chants that form the hook in “Conspirator” to the short but sweet “Funn” everything seems to work. Don’t misread my sentiments – many bands have done what they’ve done before. I just find it enjoyable. Especially in light of the recent death of the last surviving member of the Ramones, punk minded mourners might find some solace in this EP. So yes, some punk sensibilities exist too – although I wouldn’t call this an outright punk record. The production definitely has a throwback feel that people who grew up on old and new school punk and garage rock will appreciate. That guitar riff in the barn-burner that is “Cool” is especially tasty and serves as the flagship moment of the tune. “Half Bad” has the same effect as “Cool,” except for the fact that the flagship guitar lick happens much earlier in the song.
White Reaper is angst-ridden catchy rock meant to played loud and experienced in someone’s basement at its best. These guys are a handful.
