Review: ANAMANAGUCHI – Endless Fantasy (2013)

1939

By Corey Leaman

I first heard of Anamanaguchi back in 2009 on Collegehumor’s “Bleep Bloop”. At the time I thought it was a cool little niche using an old Nintendo game console as an instrument but like a lot of things related to the host of that show, Jeff Rubin, I thought it was just something a small group of people knew about.  However I was wrong. After the “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game” soundtrack came out, that’s all I ever heard of the game. Their song “Jetpack Blues, Sunset Hues” is the theme song to one of my favorite podcasts “The Nerdist.” And not too long ago they were on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’s game week performing “Endless Fantasy.” Sometimes it nice to be proven wrong.

Creating Endless Fantasy, they managed to do it without the help of a label and they are the one most successful music project on Kickstater, reaching their goal of $50,000 in just eleven hours and at the end of the run raised $277,399.

Endless Fantasy is a fun upbeat chiptune rock album. Sometimes it even has funny moments like “Meow” whose chorus features electronic cats. If you grew up with an NES you might recognize some of the sounds but it’s not a distraction from the music as a whole. Mixing in with the electronica is live guitar, bass, drums, and occasionally vocals, setting them apart from other bands of the genre, and in my option give the tracks a fuller sound.

Every track on Endless Fantasy is fully enjoyable, dancey, and will set you in a good mood.
