This show was an alternative lovers’ dream. Despite my relative unfamiliarity with all three of these groups, I knew how naive of me it would be to assume this would be anything other than an enjoyable show. IATU was the perfect vehicle to test this hypothesis.
Now, Now from Minnesota played a set of brooding, driving rock spurred by dual female vocals and the steady rhythms of drummer Brad Hale. The Stevie Nicks-like vocals corroborated the talent of the band, and kept everyone engaged. Six alluring songs warmed up the crowd for what was to come. This is one band I definitely want to get to know further.
Circa Survive continued the mood set by Now, Now, only intensifying it. Anthony Green’s unique high-pitched vocals exceeded expectations in the live setting. He, and the rest of the band were at ease on stage as they churned through old and new hits like the epic “Birth of the Economic Hit Man” and “Get Out.” The only hiccup during the set involved Green calling out an irate audience member who had knocked someone over maliciously to get to the front. This person ended up getting kicked out, much to the enthusiasm of all. The band wrapped the dozen song set with atmospheric, intricate guitar work all over the place and Green having the odd habit of making a polishing motion on the top of the mic in between song lines.
Minus the Bear ditched the brooding atmospheric ambience for a more straightforward rock and roll environment. From their newest album (and set) opener “Steel Blood” the classic “Drilling,” the band maintained a happy, laid back yet intricate party-rock vibe that filled the whole Newport space. This band is no frills, no drama rock. I left their set with a good taste in my mouth and their album in my hand.
