Mobile, AL-based ATragicVictory haven’t released new music in a decade and a half, but this hasn’t done anything to silence their loyal fanbase from keeping a close eye. The group played a one-time reunion back in 2023, but their most recent show sees the group finally putting the nail in the coffin as drummer/vocalist Michael Lambeth relocates for work. The farewell show featured a stacked roster of bands whose sounds ranged from post-hardcore to djent to even the commercial appeal of pop-punk. There was even a heartfelt reunion of a former music teaching (drumming in one band) with a former student (who was the lead vocalist in another act). And while many of these artists could easily warrant their own posts, the crowd’s singing made it clear that they were largely there to give ATragicVictory a powerful sendoff.
ATragicVictory’s small-yet-robust discography included a self-titled full length and a follow-up EP which saw original synth player Caleb Parker move to lead vocals. This reunion featured original vocalist Stephen Whiddon, much like their 2023 performance. The band’s style is characteristic of the late 00s and early 10s progressive post-hardcore boom, garnering them comparisons to the likes of The Receiving End of Sirens, Attack Attack!, Thrice, Circa Survive, and From Autumn to Ashes. Their live performance feels freeze-framed into that era, but thankfully the crowd’s memory of the band’s lyrics has not appeared to have faded.
After bands break up, prospects of any forms of reunion can dwindle. Maybe it’s the stresses of the spotlight or fractured relationships between members. It’s clear that the decision to retire the ATragicVictory name was only for the best of reasons: Lambeth is a critical piece of the puzzle, and the band’s synergy simply isn’t the same without him.
Fans can rejoice in the one last hurrah, but for those who were not able to make it in person, we’ve got the whole set below.
This is awesome!
