From the sun-soaked streets of Brooklyn, Beach Fossils bring us a dreamy soundscape of indie-pop. The band effortlessly captures wistful melodies that invoke feelings of solace and escape. Beach Fossils’ most recent album captures the essence of their dreamy indie-pop sound while incorporating fresh sounds and a sense of existential angst while maintaining the same relaxed vibes they’re known for. Their music embodies a delicate balance of nostalgia and contemporary flair where shimmering guitars meet introspective lyrics.
Sleeping On My Own – The album opens up with a pop song about love and loss, feeling alone, and finally accepting that loneliness. I don’t know what to say / I’m tryna get myself together / And neither one of us will take the blame. The song ends with the stand-out phrase “I’m okay”.
Run To The Moon – Has a similar laid-back mood, but it’s filled with the complex emotions of frontman Dustin Payseur. It’s about dealing with personal struggles and doubts, but ultimately making sacrifices and maturing for the one you love.
Don’t Fade Away – This song embraces the surf-rock sound that Beach Fossils is known for. Catchy and relaxed, Payseur’s laid-back vocals float over layers of guitar riffs. This song captures the feeling of missing someone. and acknowledges the profound impact that person’s presence has on the surroundings, highlighting how their absence can transform an entire space.
(Just Like The) Setting Sun – This song is akin to the melodic, melodramatic pop songs of the early 2000s, created by the likes of The Cure or Coldplay. This dream-pop song expresses a sense of introspection and longing for connection. He reflects on past mistakes, questions the validity of their relationships, and seeks validation from others.
Anything Is Anything – Has a similar vintage rock sound conveying a sense of dissatisfaction, restlessness, and maybe even a search for meaning. He seeks temporary thrills but finds them unsatisfying. They feel disconnected from themselves and others, they seek deeper understanding and fulfillment.
Dare Me – There’s something so comforting about this song for me. Payseur’s snap-shot lyrics are entrancing, paired with soothing guitars. In these lyrics a night at a party takes a turn for the worse. The party leaves you feeling shallow and longing for more genuine connections. I’ll be your contender / If we can live forever / Caught in this landslide / Are we’re gonna be running / ’Til the end of our lives?
Feel So High – This one’s even more retro than the last few, the 80s synths are supported by reverb-soaked vocals. These lyrics are like a roller coaster ride through life’s ups and downs, there’s a contrast between the ease and difficulty of life. There’s a desire to chase someone else’s dreams, but you’ve got to live your own life instead.
Tough Love – It’s about realizing somebody close to you wasn’t your friend after all.
Seconds – This song is short and concise, it’s about realizing you love somebody more than they love you.
Numb – Another laid-back tune, it’s easy to get lost in the layers of guitar static. The words are difficult to hang onto as they float away into the distance.
This song is about finding it difficult to be vulnerable, they’re not sure how to feel but there’s so much they should have to say. I think this song can be summed up by these lyrics I feel nothing / I feel numb.
Waterfall – Unfortunately Payseur recently had a family member battling cancer. Throughout the circumstance, they were surprisingly optimistic while facing something too difficult. Thankfully they survived and gained a new perspective on life. Their strength and bravery were really inspiring, this song is an homage to their strength.
With this album, the band gracefully transitions into a more pop-infused direction. Bunny is not as up-tempo and optimistic as their debut guitar pop album that captured our attention. Demonstrating their versatility in creating indie music across various styles while remaining authentic to their own distinct sound. They incorporate their pop melodies while also exploring added elements of twangy folk influence. Its sound captures the band’s cozier and comforting side.
