The world is in a mess according to musician Grandson, and you know what he’s right, as the planet is shuddering in pain, crying and withering to the sounds of riots and suffocating from the fumes. He’s a man on a mission too, breaking conventions with his able voice and his trademark lyrical style, and by pushing the boundaries of his art, he may inspire some to change their ways.
It’s a dark listen this, a record describing the highs and lows, the troubles and true despair. Grandson sings with purpose, and reads from his trusty book anecdotes which tell us that he’s railing against the status quo and what we call the norm. The norm is mundane, really, but it’s the safest way to live, they tell us.
It’s hypnotic at times too, letting the mind think creatively while listening on, and though it’s a masterstroke, some may be put off by the subjects and themes. This shouldn’t derail the record’s success, as it is a juggernaut in terms of scope and creativity.
Eulogy is brilliant, and it begins with a grungy guitar sequence. The words are truthful here, as Grandson details the dark side of the internet and a brush with suicide. These themes are littered on this record. Drones is a song about world troubles. It’s another well versed track, and the chorus is majestic. Grandson sings about drones being in the sky like fireflies.
Half My Heart is a acoustic track. Grandson sings about his anxiety, and the chorus bursts with energy. The musician conveys hurt and addiction. Heather poignantly expresses love, and it’s a track that shows Grandson’s expert lyricism. It’s a sad song, about sad times, and the piano sound increases the emotion.
Grandson expresses himself fully on I Love You, I’m Trying and his lyrics shine.
