North Shore, Massachusetts emotive power pop outfit Cape Crush have set high expectations for their upcoming album with the release of the title track “San Souci,” a kiss off track so bouncy and catchy that you might not realize how acidic it is without the help of the lyric video.
The track is a smorgasbord of pop delicacies, weaving together pop punk guitars, singalong melodies, and a wry humor that lands somewhere like a cross between Blue era Weezer and Regina Spektor, with just a little Irish folk music thrown in. The lyrics offer an invitation to escape and intimacy that sounds defiantly romantic, until the final verse when the music dies down and lead singer Ali Lipman growls that she wants to stick a fork in your [expletive] thigh.
The switch would be alarming if it wasn’t so charming, and it speaks to Cape Crush’s ability to interject their sense of humor without coming off as jokey. They also manage to fit a fiddle line into the final moments without feeling incongruent with the electric guitar-based palette they have built before, which is a testament to their composition skills. All we can hope is that the full length offers more of the same.
San Souci is out April 14th through Ancient Injury Records. Presave it now.
