Mayfly Releases HIDEAWAY, Vol. I

Late last summer I was introduced to the musical stylings of Mayfly and had the opportunity to review their latest single at the time (you can read my review here). I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with their aesthetic. Their groove is a whole vibe of it’s own.

Mayfly is back with their EP, Hideaway, Vol. I, which is comprised of four previously released tracks with the addition of two new tracks and an intro. While the majority of the EP has been previously released those tracks find new life on the EP as they paint a broader picture with the other tracks.

The EP opens with “SINKING” which serves as an intro and leads right in to “Take Me Away.” “Take Me Away” is the first of two new tracks and it fits nicely at the beginning of the EP giving a solid representation of what Mayfly is capable of and what we can all look forward to on the remainder of the EP and any future releases that may be in the works. “Ma peau brule” follows and is the other new track. As conveyed from the title the entire track is in French. It’s a unique approach given the rest of the EP is in English. It definitely stands out due to the lyrical unique nature.

From here on the EP consists of the previously released tracks/singles starting with “Pretty Ending.” “Pretty Ending” was my introduction to Mayfly and is a solid groove of a track that is airy and atmospheric in nature. “Passenger Seat” follows and carries more of a dance rhythm in comparison to the prior tracks. The eb and flow of the track keeps the EP moving forward and creates a slight contrast even if it is just rhythmically.

The EP rounds out with “ALL DREAMS FADE” and “Black Water.” “ALL DREAMS FADE” plays more in to the slower groove aspect that Mayfly is capable of while “Black Water” carries more of an orchestrated build as the track progresses that closes out the album in a solid manner.

Hideaway, Vol. I is a solid effort that has been a work in progress since early 2022 as the previously released tracks culminate to find their full potential within the EP as a whole. As previously stated, Mayfly’s groove is a vibe all it’s own and is one that should be visited frequently. Here’s to hoping that Hideaway, Vol I is just the beginning of a bigger and broader artistic endeavor from the duo.
