Fearless Records to Release: “Punk Goes Christian Rock”

Fearless Records, in its longstanding series featuring punk bands covering popular genre songs has announced its next release Punk Goes Christian Rock.

In the same spirit of Punk Goes Pop, Punk Goes 80’s, Punk Goes 90’s, and Punk Goes Crunk, both legendary and up-and-coming punk artists will cover classic Christian Rock songs from the 90’s and 2000’s.

Up and coming girl punk act, The Linda Lindas whose video for “Racist, Sexist Boy” filmed at the LA Public Library has garnered 1.3 million views on Youtube, will be covering the OG riot grrrls Point of Grace’s massive hit, “Keep the Candle Burning.”

Political hardcore/rap group Stray from the Path will be doing their version of DC Talk’s “Jesus Freak.” Vocalist Drew York stated in a recent interview: “People often think our style is heavily influenced by Rage Against the Machine, but the truth is, if it wasn’t for “Jesus Freak” Stray from the Path wouldn’t even be a band. We’re so excited to get this opportunity to pay tribute to the kings who inspired us.”

Finally, the recently reunited My Chemical Romance shared in a tweet that they will be releasing their version of Chris Rice’s classic praise song “Cartoons,” which asks the question “What if cartoons got saved?” Singer Gerard Way further tweeted on his personal account that while the band was on hiatus he took voice acting classes, focused heavily on impressions, and that he was “really excited to show the world what he can do!” The band teased that their version is going to be updated for the 21st century and will include some new voices including Rick Sanchez, Linda Belcher, Cartman, and Jake the Dog.

Other tracks already announced are Rise Against covering Stephen Curtis Chapman’s “The Great Adventure,” Turnstile doing a groovy version of Audio Adrenaline’s “Big House,” and Streetlight Manifesto taking on the W’s “The Devil is Bad.”

Fearless promises the full tracklist will be released in late May and that there will be physical versions to accompany digital downloads, which will include vinyl and cassette as well as super limited physical versions on floppy disk and wax cylinder.

In related news, MxPx announced they were approached to participate in the project but instead decided to re-record their entire Pokinatcha album, with clearer production value and 500% more uses of the f-bomb. Release date TBA.
