It’s been out for a couple of weeks now. What? Why, the new twenty one pilots single of course! It’s been tradition around here to ask followers of Tuned Up what they think of the lead single from our hometown success story’s newest outing.
What of the below do you agree with? Who do you disagree with? Is this the best lead single yet, or is it a derivative synthy snoozer? Let us know! And keep an eye out for more opportunities to weigh in on lead singles. The band releases Scaled and Icy on May 21st. [Promo photo by Ashley Osborn]
“Great 80s kind of vibe. It’s definitely a colorful song and the hook is strong. A little different for 21 Pilots regarding the mood but it’s still got their signature feel. Everything is catchy and well written. Their fans will love it (and it will likely bring in some new fans as well) and 75% of Columbus, OH musicians will hate it because of who they are. Good stuff.” – Derek Christopher, Wandering Stars
“It’s catchy and very poppy, but I feel like it’s missing something. I’m not disappointed, but I’m also not overly impressed either.” – Phil Hawkins, Tuned Up contributor
“It’s mediocre at best. Don’t get me wrong it’s catchy but is rememberable? Not really.” – Frank Louis
“The details are better than the whole. There are cool sounds, clever moments, great ideas, but the overall product falls short of the expectations set by “Level of Concern.” ” – Chase Tremaine
“Preferred their darker, heavier side from Trench’s Jumpsuit, I initially didn’t like that one when it released but I feel the production has aged well a few years later. I’m not a huge synthpop fan as-is, and I feel there are cool ideas in Shy Away with some of the synth and guitar layering, there are parts that remind me of Death Cab’s sound, which is cool but I wish they explored more of that. I think they were aiming for something along the lines of Paramore’s “After Laughter” but didn’t quite hit the mark. It feels uninspired, lyrically especially and just two-dimensional production-wise. Video is really cool though, I’m vibing with it.” – Garrett of Cellar Dwellar
“I love everything about it. It sounds like it could have come right off of Phoenix’s terrific “Wolfgang Amadeus” album, but it’s still very TOP. Love how they switch up their sound and it somehow gets me on board every time.” – Ben Kunz, aka Benjamin Daniel
“Super catchy, but it would’ve been considered a ripoff of Phoenix’s Lisztomania even if it had come out around the same time a decade ago. Sounds kinda like the Strokes trying to play the Cure. I don’t like/dislike twenty one pilots, but this song definitely doesn’t move the needle in either direction” – Steve Knapp
“My favorite lead off single they’ve done.” -Brandon Hughes
“I loved it. Me and my son Trust have been jamming out to it the last few days!” – Heather Evans
