Nightbirde – “It’s OK”: To say that Jane Marczewski has endured a lot in the past 6 months is an understatement. Rather than try to sum up a story that is hers to tell in a brief single review, we’ll let this song do the talking. While her earlier single “Girl In A Bubble” took a more pensive approach, “It’s OK” continues the story of Jane, dressed in a breezy coating of dance pop. The chorus of the song shimmers in a very enjoyable and cathartic way. The production of Kiwi-turned-Nashvillain Duncan Sparks adds an additional layer of sheen that further elevates the song into an every-person’s anthem of optimism. As the chorus goes, “It’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok to be lost. We’re all a little lost and it’s alright.“

Tori Martin – “FUN”: Sometimes, in the world of music journalism I think writers forget that music doesn’t have to take itself seriously all the time. Tori Martin’s latest single “FUN” is direct evidence that laid back reminders to have, well, fun are very much needed – especially in the current environment. School may be starting back up, but summer still has some legs left on it. Let this song be a part of your soundtrack while you still enjoy the sun. You don’t necessarily have to be a fan of country music either – I’m not be default and I found this to be a pleasant, enjoyable listen. I can see how Tori was able to garner some recognition via her American Idol appearance, via her bright and earnest vocals.

The Night Game – “I Feel Like Dancing”: There’s always been something really nostalgic about The Night Game. While his previous full length has carried a pensive, anthemic quality vaguely reminiscent of Sting, Phil Collins or Bruce Springsteen, “I Feel Like Dancing” has an overall brighter feel to it. Some of the instrumentation even reminds me a little of what I’d hear in a Michael Jackson song. That thoughtful aura introduced in The Night Game’s earlier records does not disappear though – do not fret. You’ll find this song to be a danceable earworm.

Cappa – “Contact High”: For this music writer, Cappa’s breathy singing style has become instantly recognizable. This style has a double-layered meaning for a song called “Contact High,” as contact highs are a direct result of the secondary exposure to other folk’s breathing. This short yet sweet track is reminiscent of a nightclub playlist at sundown – probably on a patio somewhere. This isn’t a surprise when you consider that Cappa is rooted in the robust LA pop scene.

flor – “lmho”: The latest single from Fueled By Ramen’s flor has a dreamlike effect on the listener, and the accompanying visuals corroborate this. The weather in Ohio today is gorgeous – low 80s, and very low humidity. A breeze began right as the song entered its penultimate chorus, which pretty much sums up my impression right there. What’s next for the band? Who knows. But quarantine certainly inspired a step in the right direction with this uplifting track.
