One of the unexpected highlights of my summer last year was the humble Madden Road Music event, which takes place on the Dye Farm in rural Cable, OH.

This event has so much potential. It was also the one of the most relaxing and therapeutic outdoor music events I’ve attended—possibly ever.

Expect to drive out to a family farm about 45 minutes outside of Columbus, OH. Once you park, you’ll find plenty to do and probably make some new friends. The three stages are all custom built by hand.

The musical flavor is decidedly chill and humble. The house band of sorts is Daniel Dye and the Miller Road band—an americana/folk group with a Mennonite background. Expect sing-alongs, camaraderie, and some social commentary as well (one of my favorite songs from them is called “The Saddest City in the USA”).

The balance of the lineup has something for everyone. The American Landscape will be on hand to headline and to assuage any indie snobs—though I highly doubt you’re a snob if you attend this this event. This folk is earnest and warm, and it’s promoted by indie label Poptek Records. Seriously, watch the music video for “Follow You Home” below.

Other sure highlights will come from Amanda Roberts with her hammered dulcimer (folks, embrace your inner troubadour here), Dave Buker and the Historians (they take Americana into unexpected places, with payoff each time), and Joelle Hochstedler (her voice is distinctive and captivating).

Changes for the festival this year include expanded trails for hiking, a new hammock grove, and tree education and planting. Otherwise, expect lots of great music, good food, and plentiful chances to embrace being “away from it all” for a day.
