Honestly, I could just make a list of the musicians nobigdyl. is pals with and that would be enough reason for you to check him out.
Instead, I’ll say this. nobigdyl. is one of many artists on the Audiofeed lineup that are poised to pop in the near future. He is part of the movement to reclaim faith-influenced hip hop from the cheesy reputation it has earned, rightfully or not. Tuned Up had the privilege to host some of the best in the field, Beautiful Eulogy, in a show earlier this year and we definitely earned a side-eye or two from folks when we announced we’d be doing a Christian hip hop show.
Nashville based nobigdyl. recently signed with Capitol CMG, and is releasing his LP SOLAR Friday June 15th. It will probably already be out by the time you read this. You know who else is signed to Capital CMG? NF. The hip hop artist singlehandedly redefined what his genre means by topping the charts at Top 40 radio. People inside and outside of Christian circles are craving music with depth AND fun, and nobigdyl. is poised to follow that trend. I’ve never seen him live, but I imagine that, similarly to Propaganda and Levi the Poet, he is good at performing on the crowd’s level instead of at them. Let’s take some time to get to know the artist more (in the meantime follow him on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram):
Tuned Up: Sum up your sound like you’re describing your favorite beverage (hot or cold).
nobigdyl.: My sound is like a frozen hot chocolate, something that has all the allure of the heat, but ice cold in execution.
When’s the last time you were really gripped by a piece of music? Tell us about that.
I’ve been really connecting to KYLE’s Light of Mine record, specifically “Ups And Downs.” that song is like my theme song right now. “how great do i become when truly loved? my overwhelming fears are overcome” – lyrically it’s just a time capsule of this moment in my career.
What do you think of music fans using the term “Stan” to describe being a superfan?
I’m behind on Twitter lingo and still forming an opinion. I believe it goes back to Eminem’s song “Stan” which is about a stalker/fan (Stan, get it?) who is obsessed with Em.
Who would you like to see play Audiofeed in the future?
WHATUPRG, Jarry Manna, Julien Baker (again), The New Respects
What’s a hobby you (or someone in your band) enjoys that would surprise people?
I’m trying to pick Banjo up again. I used to play and rap at the same time in a Folk/Fusion band in college
How do you find out about new music?
Mostly Twitter and Spotify.
What releases from 2018 have you enjoyed so far?
Sad People Make Dope Music by Mogli The Iceburg, Pleasant Hill by WHATUPRG, Light of Mine by KYLE, DAYTONA by Pusha T.
Do you have a favorite music festival memory?
Tell us about it. Last year at Audiofeed was pretty dope. Having that many people rock with me so far from home was pretty inspiring.
What’s something about your hometown you’d encourage travelers, whether or not they’re in a touring band, to take advantage of?
Go where the locals go in Nashville. Cowboy boots and Honkey Tonks are more for the tourists than anything. stay off Broadway, go out East, hit the lake, get some Hot Chicken, see some indie rock or rap.
Take this moment to tell the people of Tuned Up about what your project has coming up that most excites you.
SOLAR is an episodic look into my life and scars and how those scars can help others heal. it’s like an arc in a larger story, for my anime fans. it’s a journey towards love.
