It is rare for us here at Tuned Up to preview a show. We typically will preview a festival or an event of sorts. That is something I am going to work on in 2017. Simply because there are bands/shows that don’t get the coverage they deserve. As one that strives to write about artists that are somewhat unknown and don’t get press like that, I can do better. So with have said that there is a show this upcoming Monday at Double Happiness that I feel people need to know about and attend.
Over the past few years, BravoArtist has changed the music scene here in Columbus for the better. I first moved here in 2009 and I went to a lot of shows, mostly Promowest shows and whatever “cool” band was playing at Rumba Café. At that time Columbus was getting skipped over by up and coming pop-punk, emo and hardcore bands. There would be the occasional show at one of the houses like Monster House or at Carabar but it wasn’t constant. I left in 2011. Upon my return to this great city in the summer of 2013 I quickly learned of BravoArtist. I instantly inserted my way into the scene here and still to this day you can find me at most pop-punk, emo, and hardcore shows. This Monday will be no exception.
The show in question is a tour of three different bands, with three different sounds. The same can be said about the locals that are playing as well. And that is one of the aspects that has this writer super pumped about this show. The tour is The Ongoing Concept/Hearts Like Lions/Capstan and the locals are Fourteen Stories High/Undergrads/That Ship’s Sailed. There are no two bands alike on this show, there truly is something for everyone, well mostly everyone.
Fourteen Stories High is the one act on the bill that I’m not too familiar with. But after listening to his music on Soundcloud I came to find that I really enjoyed what I heard. It reminded me of Andrew McMahon’s work. I’m not sure what to expect live but from what I heard this is going to be a laid back chill set. Which will be a good start to the evening. Undergrads is a local pop punk band on the rise. They are gearing up to release their debut EP, Leaving You in the Rearview. And let me tell you, if you long for the days of Drive-Thru Records, this release will quench your thirst. That Ship’s Sailed is the other local on the bill. Their infectious brand of post-hardcore will be stuck in your head for days. They recently released their debut EP, Trapped in the Middle, last month. And let me tell you, if you were not there, you missed one heck of a show.
As far as the touring acts go, they all are slowing gaining fans in their respective genres. First up is Capstan. This progressive pop-punk unit from the Sunshine state has been around for a few years. It wasn’t until they released Cultural Divide last year that people really started to take notice of them. That was hands down one of the best EPs of 2016. It’s only a matter of time before someone wises up and signs them. Next, we have Hearts Like Lions, this alternative band released their debut full-length last week on Tooth and Nail Records. I first came to know of them a few years ago, they had a song that was played often on RadioU. A few months later I got the chance to see them at Donatos Basement and I was in awe of their live performance. Fans of Artifex Pero, Secret & Whisper and Circa Survive should really dig this band. Last but not least we have The Ongoing Concept. I first came to know of them a few years back when they played at Kobo. (Man I miss shows there) After the very first song, I knew I was in for one hell of a show. That turned out to be true. I just remember thinking these guys are going to replace The Chariot as that crazy chaotic band. In my eyes, they lived up to that. It has been a few years since I have seen them, so I’m curious to see if they still bring the chaos. Did I mention on their last album, Homemade, that they actually cut the down the trees and made the instruments themselves that they used to record the album? How flipping awesome is that? I’m telling you on Monday, March 13th the place to be is Double Happiness. See you in the pit!!!!
